The Shore of Jæren — Landscape and Light

A photographic journey in light, sea, and magic.

The Jæren coast, at the south-western coast of Norway, is known for its special light and its long beaches. Here, sea and sky meet in an ever-changing play of light. Since light itself is the main subject of the photographs, I have chosen black and white to capture the contrasts between darkness and brightness that are the hallmark of the Jæren beaches. In many ways, the light here can be compared to that of Skagen in Denmark and, to some extent, Lofoten.

Obrestad og Naustretangen Lighthouse

The Jæren coast is known as a treacherous stretch of sea in stormy weather, which made its lighthouses vital to seafaring. These two lighthouses stand only a few hundred meters apart.

Refsnes Beach

Here, sand and stone weave together, side by side. Bathed in the shifting light of Jæren, they form a striking canvas.

Hellestø Beach and Feistein Lighthouse

After the rain, dramatic light often breaks through the clouds. When the silhouette of a lighthouse and a distant ship appears on the horizon, the moment becomes truly magical.
